How Dogs Help Kids Read and Succeed in the Classroom was recently featured twice on Univision!

The original after-school program was featured by Fox 5 and KUSI News in San Diego when it was being piloted at The Elementary Institute of Science. Below are two videos spotlighting the program on these local news stations.

If you are involved with the media and would like to feature our program that is currently being run in elementary schools in Palm Springs Unified School District and in Desert Sands Unified School District, please contact us to arrange an interview at your convenience. We look forward to connecting with you soon!

We had a fantastic time interviewing children from the first graduating class of this program at our “First Annual How Dogs Help Kids Read and Succeed in the Classroom Reunion” on Sunday, August 16, 2015. We asked these kids for any advice, tips, and suggestions they would give to the next 520 children who will be participating in the program this year – video coming soon! Each child was able to choose a free book from the program to take home. And the best part? This event was the brainchild of Catherine Montes, one of the parents whose child participated in the program last year at Rio Vista Elementary. She even hosted the event in her home. I am so grateful for all of the wonderful support I’ve received from the families who have participated in this program so far. Next year we are going to invite ALL of the participants to a reunion!

I had a wonderful time at Loving All Animals’ incredible Super Pet Adoption Event this weekend in Rancho Mirage, and enjoyed modeling a lesson from my program for the kids! We talked about why reading with your pet is not only a great way to spend time with your dog, but a way to improve your reading skills. I shared fun reading strategies that kids can use when they get stuck on a “Tricky Trouble Word” and showed them how they can create their very own Tricky Trouble Words Doggy Bags to use with their own pets. I shared some of my favorite children’s books of all time that help teach empathy and compassion to kids, and we talked about how kids can start their very own service learning projects in their homes and communities. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Perhaps the best news of all? It looks like we may have adopted out nearly 300 animals to loving homes because of this wonderful collaborative effort. To learn more about this great event, please visit Loving All Animals – I hope to see you again next year!
